My doctor would has suggested I use statins to lower my cholesterol levels but I would like to know if there is anything else I can do via my diet?
Without knowing your specific details, I can only suggest that you follow your doctors recommendations. However there are dietary changes you can make so as to assist in the process of lowering cholesterol. Firstly read the labels, look at the nutrition facts for Trans fats, make sure this is zero. Trans fats have been shown to reduce good cholesterol and increase bad cholesterol. Increase your fiber consumption, in particular soluble fiber which can be found in oat-meal and fruit can help reduce the amount of fat and cholesterol that is absorbed during a meal. I’d take a look at your cereals also and try swapping them for high fiber varieties. Introduce more polyunsaturated fats into your diet such as Olive oil or from walnuts which have been shown to lower blood cholesterol. Recently Broccoli was found to have protective effects on the heart valves, preventing building up of fatty plaques in the more vulnerable areas.
