Does your BMI increase or decrease as you age?

need help

This question was not answered by a nutritionist, however another user commented.

Answer:

This is a confusing question. From infancy/childhood into adulthood, it increases. A BMI of 20 is considered normal for an adult but overweight for a 5-year-old. However, once you reach adulthood, it doesn’t have to do either.

Am I dangerously underweight?

before I start I DON’T have a eating disorder at all. I have a fast metabolism. i’m 16, 5’9 3/4, and I weigh 8 stones (112 pounds). My waist is about 25″. Apparently my BMI is 16.2, am I dangerously underweight? Should I see a doctor?:(

Answer:

I would see a doctor and log your food if you aren’t already to see how many calories you’re eating and how many you’re burning.

Are there any health insurance companies that don’t use BMI as a factor?

My BMI is terrible I’m at 38.7, but the health insurance companies don’t take into account that my body fat % is normal. I work out a lot and unfortunately the more you work out the heavier you’ll be cause you’ll be packin on muscle if you do it right.

This question was not answered by a nutritionist, however another user commented.

Answer:

You should speak with an independent broker and arrange a medical exam. That way, you will have proof that your weight is due to muscle, not fat. An online quote system can’t take things like that into account.

Do I have to be severely underweight to go into inpatient anorexia treatment?

I’m a little bit underweight (My BMI is 17.5 and I weigh 96 pounds) But would I have to be lower than this to go into inpatient treatment? I think I need inpatient, but I’m not sure if I could get it because of my weight.

This question was not answered by a nutritionist, however another user commented.

Answer:

If you feel you need help, then they should accept you. I think the only requirements of inpatient treatment are disordered eating and the will to want to get better. It is better to get into treatment now than when you are even more underweight.

is there a way to figure out how much weight you need to lose without using a BMI calculator?

I heard that the BMI charts are inaccurate so i would like to know if there are any other ways to determine how much weight someone needs to lose. I’ve also heard something about using measurements, but i am not 100% sure.

Answer:

Your BMI is in comparison to other people, but if you truly wanna know how fat you are, get your body percentage.

How many calories a day to lose 4-5lb per week?

**current BMI of 23! Hey, Just wandering how many calories should be consumed per day to lose 4-5lb per week on moderate exercise (20min run and 50 stair runs a day). I know its a lot, but i only plan to follow it for a few months then i don’t mind if i gain. Please only answer if you know or are going to be helpful. There’s enough hate in this world without people judging diets. Thanks x

Answer:

3500 calories = 1 lbs of fat You would have to burn 14,000-17,500 a week or 2,000-2,500 a day The average person burns about 500 calories an hour of exercise. So you would have to exercise 2 hours a day and eat only 1,000 a day. Try and see if you could survive that for a few days.

Is there anything being done to prevent bad media messages accociated with the cause of eating disorders?

Are there any laws or rules being put in place to stop the media from causing/adding to eating disorders and body image issues? For example, banning airbrushing in magazines or not allowing models with a BMI lower than 18.

Answer:

The situation is getting better but it’s slow going. I think parents’ influence is the biggest consideration. We cannot continue to send the wrong messages to our children.

How do you gain weight without getting out of shape?

My boyfriend is 6’3 and about 160 lbs, and about a 18.50 BMI but wants to increase that so that his BMI is about 20-22. He has a really high metabolism, and works out on regular intervals. How can he do this without losing his shape?

This question was not answered by a nutritionist, however another user commented.

Answer:

Add protein to his workouts, also eat a high protein and fibre diet. Eat whole grain bread, oatmeal with protein in it. Better yet pick him up a man’s fitness magazine they have a lot of suggestions in there. Or he could go to a gym and talk to a personal trainer and they would be more than willing to set out a workout and diet plan for him for about 50 bucks
