Ideal weight and height for gymnastics?

I’m 5’8 and 161 pounds. I’m 15 and I want to do high school gymnastics. Am I too tall or weigh too much to do so? What’s an ideal weight for gymnastics?

Answer:

by the bmi scale, your almost overweight. it’s good to be tall for gymnastics, that’s a plus actually. but maybe you weigh this way because your body type/you have muscle. but i would suggest losing 20 pounds. you should be at 140-145 as the bmi says. Good luck!

Should BMI be dependable on how healthy you are?

So I calculated my BMI and it says I was at 29 (overweight) but then I checked John Cena’s BMI (I know he’s not really an athlete, but he looks healthy) and it came to be obese. Without being full of myself, I consider myself pretty beefy. I do have extra weight to trim off, but I can feel pretty big muscles underneath me.

This question was not answered by a nutritionist, however another user commented.

Answer:

The problem with BMI is that it doesn’t take muscle mass into consideration, so it’s definitely NOT a reliable source of health. BMI says that people like John Cena and most NFL quarterbacks are obese, when this is clearly not the case. Being healthy is NOT just about a number on the scale, it’s how you look and how much lean body mass you have. Ignore the BMI and focus more on how you look than a number on the scale.

Any suggestions on how I can lower my BMI?

I am a high school junior and my BMI is 25.7 I had recently read in a book that if your BMI is 25 or above, you’re overweight [40 and above, obese] any suggestions on what kinds of exercises and foods I should do and eat?

This question was not answered by a nutritionist, however another user commented.

Answer:

Well, it really depends on how much of your weight is muscle and how much is fat. You should walk or jog for at least 30 minutes every day at a brisk pace. Cut out ALL soda, chips, junk food, cookies, ice cream, pizza, burgers, fries, etc. Eat salads for lunch to get a lot of veggies. Eat veggies, fruits, nuts, lean meats and whole grains. If you do the above, you should lose around 10 to 12 pounds every month. You should visit http://projekttransform.com to create your own free, personal blog to track your weight loss progress. You can add pictures, tips, ideas, and just about anything you can imagine. The idea of the website is to provide a place where people can view other people’s blogs to get motivation to gain or lose weight, transform their body and transform their life.

what is the difference between your BMI and body fat ?

is the bmi what needs to be under a 10% to obtain a 6 pack? or the body fat percentage? i weight 160lbs and my body t is a 15.8

This question was not answered by a nutritionist, however another user commented.

Answer:

bmi and body fat are very different. Example Arnold Schwartzenegger- 235 pounds, 6 foot 2 random guy- 235 pounds, 6 foot 2 Arnold weighs a lot because he has a lot of muscle and hence his bmi is really really high like around 30. He is considered obese. Whereas the other fat guy weights the same amount and also has a bmi of 30 and hence is obese. Clearly the two do not have the same body fat percentages. As for your six pack, if you want to obtain one, I recommend losing body fat more than losing weight. You should try to get under 10% body fat to get a six pack. To find your percentage body fat, measure your waist size, weight, height, neck size, and hips length. Then, use an online calculator to calculate your percentage body fat.
